October 8 Zoom Meeting: A Tour of the Lost Generation, Hemingway, & Fitzgerald

Live from Paris (No Kidding):
A Tour of the Lost Generation, Hemingway, & Fitzgerald

Tuesday, October 8
Zoom, 7 p.m.

Brooklyn native and cultural tour guide Ellen Leventer, who has lived in Paris, France, since 1989, will bring to life the famed Lost Generation of writers with all of their greatness and foibles––and extreme talent. She will join us live from Paris for our October meeting.

“I will take you on a literary tour of Paris in the 1920s, a time when Hemingway wrote his first novel, The Sun Also Rises, when James Joyce shocked readers with his 732-page literary innovation, Ulysses, when Fitzgerald published his misunderstood masterpiece, The Great Gatsby, and when Gertrude Stein tried to reinvent the English language deeming herself the ‘Cubist of Words,’” she says.

Learn the truth about the famed Shakespeare & Co. bookstore and Paris salons. In the aftermath of World War 1, some 40,000 Americans were living in Paris. Most came to party, escaping Prohibition, but some came to find themselves. They were writers, artists, and musicians, escaping what one author called “the cultural wasteland of industrial America.” In Paris they were free to create, free to live hedonist lifestyles, free to drink to excess and to party to the new sounds emanating from the 300-plus jazz clubs that sprang up.

They formed a community in Paris that became known as the Lost Generation, a unique group that produced some of the greatest writers of the 20th Century––six won Nobel Prizes and ten won Pulitzers, some writers receiving several.

Ellen spent her 36-year career in marketing and advertising. In retirement, she conducts literary tours of Paris on a variety of authors,  including those of the Beat Generation.

October’s meeting will give an overview of the Lost Generation of writers and then delve deeper into Ernest Hemingway’s and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Paris and their relationship. We’ve never tried something like this before, so join us for this special program. Mark your calendar as Ellen brings these incredible authors back to life for you… and perhaps for just a few moments you will walk in their shoes.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
