Tom Straw, who authored seven New York Times bestsellers under the pseudonym of Richard Castle, will talk about novel writing, what it’s like to be a bestselling author who can’t reveal his success, the writers’ room in television, and show running.
Tom originated the Nikki Heat series, based on the TV series Castle, about a famous novelist following a female detective around New York for inspiration. His identity was a strict secret until the series ended in 2016 and it was finally revealed that Straw was the real Richard Castle. (You could say he shared the honor with actor Nathan Fillion, who played Castle in the TV series, but Tom got to keep the royalties.)
Tom’s career as a TV writer, director, and producer includes Night Court, Dave’s World, Grace Under Fire, Cosby, Whoopi, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and Nurse Jackie. He is an Emmy and Writers Guild of America nominee for his TV writing and producing. He joined Mystery Writers of America in 2007 upon publication of his first book, The Trigger Episode, and is now a member of the MWA national board. Tom published his most recent mystery, Buzz Killer, under his own name.
