Everyone wants their novel reviewed, but just how does that happen? And how does it happen at The Washington Post? Ron Charles, the Post’s most prolific reviewer who also has been editor of the Post’s “Book World,” explains the process at our February 13 chapter meeting, at 7 pm Eastern.
What books do they select? Why do they select them? What are their prejudices (and there are some)? Do they review self-published novels? Who writes their reviews? What’s with the resurgence of “Book World?” What happens to all those books that publishers send to the Post (hint, there are three closets full). Finally, is there anything you can do to increase your odds of getting reviewed?
Ron was book editor at the Christian Science Monitor before joining the Post several years ago. He has been reviewing books nonstop ever since, even while also serving as fiction editor and book editor. Today he still reviews books, and edits and writes his popular Friday online newsletter, “Book Club.”
Ron has taught American literature and critical theory in the Midwest. He’s received the Louis Shores Award for reviewing from the American Library Association; first place for Arts & Entertainment Commentary from the Society for Features Journalism; the Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing from the National Book Critics Circle; and the Veritas Media Award from the Romance Writers of America. Ron is affiliated with the National Book Critics Circle and has been a Pulitzer Prize juror.
